  • At the tender age of 11, Hussein Jilani stood on a school stage, nervous and unsure of himself, as he sang �Al Hawa Ghallab� made popular by legendary Arabic singer Umm Kalthoum. Watched by his schoolmates and teachers, the young Jilani put up such a great performance that it became the talk of the whole school and community. It also made Jilani take music very seriously, at the cost of his other love, football. As time would show, football�s loss was music�s gain for Jilani had displayed as much passion for football as for music.

    Hussein Jilani, who later adopted the stage name of Cheb, was born in Tripoli, Libya, in a family of musicians and artists. His father, Haj Jilani, was a highly talented and sensitive musician who was very selective in his music. It is not strange then that young Cheb Jilani inherited those qualities and began singing complex Arabic folk songs at a very early age.

    Cheb Jilani first became popular in Libya with the powerful rendition of songs of legendary singers like Abdul Wahab, Umm Kalthum and Abdul Halim, a formidable feat for a young man. Music lovers were amazed by the versatility of his voice and the variations in his tone. It is usually considered extremely difficult to sing in the voice of such legendary singers, but Jilani proved that he had considerable talent for reproducing their voices and singing styles.

    He mastered the �terza rima� (Mowshahat) classical style of singing, and began singing songs in different Arabic dialects, including Egyptian, Lebanese and Libyan. Versatility is Cheb Jilani�s forte. His new album features songs in the Libyan dialect as well as Egyptian, Lebanese and classical Arabic, presenting a tapestry of music that sounds similar but incorporates distinctive features that will be appreciated by audiences well versed with the nuances of each dialect.

    Cheb Jilani completed his Masters in Music with distinction from the National Music Academy (Conservatoire), Tripoli, specializing in Oud and Oriental orchestration. He perfected his inherited musical talent by imbibing the music of the masters and exploring other musical instruments and styles. His first brush with fame came when he was ranked No. 2 at the Libyan Song Festival 2001.

    The 27-year-old Libyan singer has since won a huge following with his unique brand of music that mixes the classical singing style with modern rhythms and an amazing ability to bridge the generation gap with his infectious music. This distinctive style has already earned him praise from numerous music maestros including Mulhim Barakat who described him as a singer with a �very precious and rare voice� and Hamid Al Shairi who commented that : �Cheb Jilani will create a revolution in the Arab music world.�

    Already a star in Libya and North Africa, and having won several music awards he has become a sought-after performer across the Arab world and is the first Libyan singer to win admirers outside his country. Judging by the pace at which his fame is growing, he is certainly destined to expand his musical horizons and become a leading name throughout the Arab music scene.

    Cheb Jilani is also an accomplished composer and in his new album he has composed the music for three of the songs, breathing his soul into the compositions and taking the album to an awe-inspiring level.

    But, for all his fame and popularity, Cheb Jilani has remained a simple and unassuming person and a gentleman to the core. Reserved and reticent, his passion is music and his philosophy humanity. Practical and down-to-earth it comes as no surprise that he is loved not just for his music but for his pleasing personality as well. Cheb Jilani�s stunning new album �Oyouni Sahara� is released by EMI on January 30, 2003 and features the hits �Oyouni Sahara�, �Inti Ana�, �Sili Yal Anzar�, Loumek Ala Meen�, Bitaoul Niseet�, Rasayelha�, Habibi Fakkar Bighayri� and �Bitrouhi�.


    Arabic Biography

    لم يكن شب جيلاني يدرك في أول مرة غنى فيها في مدرسته أمام الجمهور عندما كان في الحادية عشرة من عمره في أول إطلالة له على المسرح بأن عبارات الاعجاب بصوته وهو يصدح بأغنية "الهوى غلاب" لسيدة الغناء العربي أم كلثوم ستفتح له آفاقاً جديدة ليصبح من أوائل المطربين الذين إكتسبوا شهرة واسعة خلال فترة زمنية قصيرة في ليبيا والمغرب العربي ومن ثم في كافة الدول العربية. وبين إحتراف كرة القدم والغناء، إختار الشاب جيلاني التضحية بإحتراف الرياضة التي أحب من أجل التفرغ للفن والغناء.

    ولد حسين جيلاني (شب جيلاني) في مدينة طرابلس الغرب في ليبيا ضمن عائلة إحترفت الطرب والفن، حيث كان الوالد الحاج جيلاني يملك موهبة فائقة وإحساس مرهف في تذوق الاغاني والطرب. لذلك، لم يكن غريباً على الشاب جيلاتي أن ينمو على حب الموسيقى العربية بكافة أطيافها من الفن الشعبي والفولكلور الى أغاني الموشحات ثم الغناء بعدة لهجات عربية مثل المصرية واللبنانية بالاضافة الى اللهجة الليبية.

    ووسط هذه البيئة الفنية، إستطاع شب جيلاني أن يخط لنفسه لوناً غنائياً خاصاً إسترعى إنتباه أساتذة في التلحين والغناء مثل الاستاذ ملحم بركات الذي وصفه عند سماع صوته بأنه يمتلك صوتاً رائعاً يندر مثيله. وقال عنه حميد الشاعري: "شب جيلاني سيكون ثورة في عالم الأغنية... أنتظروه". كما إستطاع التوفيق بين هواية الغناء والدراسة المدرسية، حيث التحق بعد الثانوية بكلية الفنون والاعلام في ليبيا حيث حاز على بكالوريوس في الموسيقى وبدأ بعدها عملية التحضير لشهادة الماجستير.

    ونجح المطرب شب جيلاني في إكتساب شهرة واسعة في ليبيا بعد أن أثبت وجوده من خلال اسلوبه الجديد المتميز. كما برع في أداء الأغنيات الطربية القديمة لعمالقة الفن العربي الأصيل أمثال أم كلثوم وعبد الحليم حافظ ومحمد عبد الوهاب. وحاز الشاب جيلاني على إعجاب وتقدير متذوقي الطرب في الوطن العربي الذين وجدوا في صوته طلاقة متميزة وخامات صوتية فريدة. ولا يختلف إثنان من متتبعي الأحداث الفنية مدى صعوبة تأدية الاغاني باللهجات العربية المختلفة التي تتطلب قدرات صوتية كبيرة. ولكن الموهبة الواعدة التي يملكها جيلاني تنذر ببزوغ فنان واعد ينضم الى الاصوات المميزة في عالم الاغنية العربية.

    وتحمل أغاني شب جيلاني الذي هو في مطلع العشرينيات من العمر بين طياتها معان عميقة حيث إنها تهدف من خلال جمعها بين الموسيقى الكلاسيكية القديمة والإيقاع العصري الحديث الى تعزيز التواصل بين الاجيال عبر تلبيتها الاذواق الطربية لفئات عديدة وفي كافة الاقطار العربية.

    وحرص شب جيلاني على الجمع بين الموهبة والعلم، حيث قام بصقل موهبته الفطرية بتعزيز قدراته العلمية في الموسيقى عبر تعلم العديد من الآلات الموسيقية والغوص في خصائص العديد من المدارس الفنية. وقد بدأ إسمه يلامس الشهرة عندما حل في المركز الثاني في مهرجان الأغنية الليبية للعام 2001.

    ويتميز شب جيلاني بثقافته الفنية المتميزة حيث أنه يعتبر ملحن متميز ومطرب موهوب، الأمر الذي أعطي أغانيه زخماً قوياً وطرازاً فريداً يجمع بين فن المغرب العربي ومشرقه. كما قام بإستقاء الكثير من أغانيه من التراث الليبي الذي ألهم العديد من الفنانين اللذين سبقوه مثل أحمد فكرون (مؤسس موسيقى الراي) والفنان حميد الشاعري مؤسس مدرسة الأغنية والموسيقى الشبابية الرائجة في الأسواق منذ مطلع الثمانينات حتى الآن ومكتشف جميع الأصوات الرائدة حالياً على الساحة الفنية, وغيرهم من عمالقة الفن. وقد قام جيلاني في ألبومه الأخير بتلحين ثلاث أغنيات من الالبوم مما شرع له الباب واسعاً لإبراز مقدرته الكبيرة في التلحين الموسيقي كميزة مكملة لموهبته الطربية. كما قام شب جيلاني بكتابة كلمات العديد من أغانيه، خاصة تلك التي تأخذ المنحى العاطفي والرومانسي.

    ويغني شب جيلاني في البومه الاول الذي يحمل عنوان: "عيوني سهارى" بلهجات عربية متعددة تشمل الليبية والمصرية واللبنانية والخليجية إضافة إلى اللغة الفصحى. وترافق هذه الأغاني قائمة متنوعة من الأنغام الموسيقية التي تحمل ميزات فريدة، ومن المتوقع أن تلاقي هذه الأغاني صدىً واسعاً بين أوساط الجماهير العربية على اختلاف أذواقهم الفنية.

    ولم تغير الشهرة التي بدأ شب جيلاني باكتسابها من شخصيته المحببة، حيث حافظ على تواضعه المتميز. ويملك الجيلاني شغفاً كبيراً في سبر أغوار علوم الموسيقى الى اقصى حدود. لذلك، فليس من المستغرب أن يستطيع شب جيلاني ان يحصد هذا النجاح خلال فترة قصيرة، ليس فقط نتيجة لموهبته الفنية بل أيضاً لشخصيته المتميزة�
